Career opportunities in digital marketing have been growing at an exceptional rate and increasingly employers are seeking candidates who can evidence tactical knowledge combined with an ability to think strategically and lead teams. There are of course all manner of teaching materials and reference sites freely available on the internet, however much of this is tactically focussed and, as a result, fails to address wider strategic issues.

The DMB fills a gap in the market by delivering a learning experience that, from the outset, encourages you to “explore the possible” and to make the connections between deep knowledge of tactics and strategy.
The course materials are based on the Certificate level of our Post Graduate degree course in Digital Marketing Leadership.
It is the product of a three-year collaboration: a globally recognised University, with expertise in learning and development; and a leading digital marketing consultancy, with a clear appreciation of the strategic and tactical elements required to deliver digital marketing results, and, importantly, a track record of achievement for commercial clients. Frequently Asked Questions
At the moment both the DMB and MSc are available in English only.
The DMB is a fully online course which is accessible through any PC, Mac or mobile device web browser.
The only external software/platforms required are; internet connection, web browser of your choice and a pdf reader. The course is not available offline as videos are streamed within the Learning Portal, however pdf copies of all scripts and visual displays are available for download through the portal.
During the checkout process you’ll be asked to create an account with your email and password, this will then become the login information for the programme. Upon completing the checkout process you will receive an email with these details and full access to the programme.
The DMB materials provide you with an excellent insight into the approaches, techniques and tools of digital marketers. Alongside this, you gain important insight into the complementary role of the digital marketer as a “change agent” in organisations.
The digital marketer not only identifies and evaluates opportunities and makes recommendations for strategies and tactics, they also play an important part in making things happen. In this role they need to be able to communicate effectively, negotiate and persuade (at many levels) and, crucially, plan, manage, lead and coordinate change. This requires skills in Leadership which is developed as students work through modules in the later stages of the MSc programme.
On completing the DMB, participants can apply for entry to the University of Aberdeen’s Digital Marketing Leadership programmes at either Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Masters (MSc) level. We anticipate most participants will initially apply to top up their Professional Certificate with the Postgraduate Certificate (60 credit units made up of two 30 credit unit modules).
The materials have been mapped closely to the Postgraduate Certificate so you will only need to undertake and pass the University’s required assessment (see note 1) for each of these two 30 credit unit modules to achieve this award. Participants can then apply to continue to the Postgraduate Diploma (comprising two further 30 credit unit modules) and on successful completion of these, to the MSc award (comprising a final 30 credit unit module and a 30 credit unit consultancy-based project).
Importantly, there are no exams in the top-up modules, as indeed there are no exams for the whole of the Postgraduate Diploma and MSc awards. The assessment is via a portfolio of work designed to test both participants’ knowledge of digital marketing and how to implement digital marketing strategy and tactics.

For the reflective reviews we give you an issue and ask you to consider it – usually from two perspectives.
For the presentation and the report, we give you a scenario and ask you to act out the part of the role of a digital marketing consultant. For example, an entrepreneur wants some evaluation of their idea and some thoughts about routes to market. You then have to pitch for this piece of work showing to the “client” in a presentation and a report that you understand something of the market, how their idea might be developed and brought to the attention of potential customers. You work on a recorded presentation and submit this. We review this and give you some initial thoughts before you submit your final report.
When can I do this assessment and what are the deadlines?
To take the assessment you must meet the entry requirements for the Postgraduate Certificate and submit an application to start in January, June or September.
The entry requirements for the postgraduate Certificate are normally:
- The equivalent of a good UK honours degree (in any subject) or
- Work experience with a record of achievement.
If you are applying on the work experience basis we would like to see a copy of your CV and may follow this up with a telephone or similar interview.
- For non-native speakers, and those who have not graduated from a programme where English was the medium of instruction, satisfactory evidence of your English language competence.
On meeting the entry requirements, you will then be enrolled. You then work on the assessments in-line with the normal calendar for the full online programme. This means that you will have about four months to complete the assessments (half of the assessment work to be completed in the first 2 months).

You will need to complete your details and upload scanned copies of various documents. These include: your qualifications (certificates and transcripts), your CV, a short statement of purpose (~ 150 words), English language certification (if appropriate) and a reference. If I pass the Postgraduate Certificate can I go further in my studies?
Yes! If successful you can go on to study two further modules up to Postgraduate Diploma level and then further, with two more modules, for the MSc in Digital Marketing Leadership. The current fee for each of these subsequent levels (Diploma and Masters) is £3,250.
You can work through the materials at your own pace. Once a participant is enrolled on the course and has received their username and password to access the learning portal they have access to the materials and forum for 12 months.
You may apply for your certificate as soon as you have completed the course materials however you will still be able to access the materials and forum until the end of the 12 month period.
There are over 20 hours of learning videos and carefully selected references offered as part of the DMB. All topics are broken into bite-size chunks. We anticipate that participants may watch some videos more than once. Indeed, for optimal learning we recommend that they are viewed three times. Once to obtain awareness and insight, a second time to bed-down the knowledge, and then a third time to fully appreciate the connections between the topics.
The DMB has no exams, however there are self-check questions to ensure that you have understood the concepts. These questions can be attempted as many times as necessary, but participants must achieve at least 70% pass.
You will be invited to participate in an online forum. It is not a requirement of the course to participate however it is a great place to discuss issues, ask questions and make observations. We support the forum as moderators and also provide “one to one” technical email support.
No. All participants need to know as they go through the materials is that commercial marketing is very simple:
- It involves understanding customer needs and wants
- On the basis of these needs and wants, marketing involves conceptualising, creating and delivering value for customers through its products and services whilst making a return on any investments that are made by the organisation.
- It involves organisations being aware of changes in the wider society and the market it operates in.
No. To operate effectively in this area you do not need to know how to code. Instead, you need to have the capacity to learn how to evaluate opportunities in the marketplace and make recommendations to clients as to how best to realise these.
Whilst this may include determining specifications for a website, as a digital marketer you would not be designing and building any website.
The course content focuses on best practice strategies and tactics and is not limited to a specific country, however it may be more applicable for English speaking countries.
